Hi, everyone. In this article, I’ll tell you about two confusing Russian conjunctions “что” and “чтобы”. These conjunctions sound similar so they can cause a lot of misunderstandings if you don’t use them properly.
Что we use for actual facts whilst чтобы is used when a speaker wants to denote desired events.
Actual Facts: ЧТО
We use что when we talk about actual facts in past, present or future tenses.
Я сказала подруге, что мой брат будет работать в Нью-Йорке. (Future)
Я сказала подруге, что мой брат работал в Нью-Йорке. (Past)
Я сказала подруге, что мой брат работает в Нью-Йорке. (Present)
“Что” with certain verbs (знать to know, думать to think, считать to consider, видеть to see and some others) is used for expressing an opinion.
Я думаю, что он обязательно сдаст все экзамены. – I think he will surely pass all the exams.
Я считаю, что ты должен исполнить свой долг. – I believe you must perform your duty.
Desired Events: ЧТОБЫ
Чтобы is used to denote desired events, requests, demands, etc . Use чтобы + verb in the past tense.
Я хочу, чтобы ты ушёл. – I want you to go away.
To denote the purpose of the action:
Он купил самоучитель, чтобы учить испанский. – He bought a teach-yourself book to (in order to) study Spanish.
